It's Garbage Day
31.6 degrees at 5:30 a.m.

The TWCNY Forecast:   "Breezy & Mild, Turning More Seasonable Mid-Week.

"It will be a bright and quiet start to the work week. A cold front will move into the region by the end of the day spreading scattered showers across the region. Showers will linger into Tuesday morning, and then taper from west to east during the afternoon.
Conditions will turn more seasonable mid-week, especially in the temperature department. No big storms are on the horizon, but a series of smaller disturbances will move through from the middle of the week into the weekend bringing nuisance flurries and snow showers."

Between Sal Battaglia's funeral on Saturday morning and Don Holley's in the afternoon, Saturday was a very sad and somber day in the Village. Yesterday, when I went on my usual tour between 2:00 and 3:00 in the afternoon, it was cold and gray and there was almost no activity to be seen. I kept thinking of an old hymn  ...  "on a desert bleak and dreary....."

Considering that are usually so many people out and about that I couldn't even begin to count them, their absence, yesterday, was very striking.

On Berrill Avenue I saw:   1 runner.
West Bacon St. - no one.
Babbott Avenue - no one.
Stafford Avenue - 2 people walking 2 dogs.
E. Bacon Street - one person leaving house to get in car.
Conger Avenue - no one.
Putnam Street - one person walking one dog.
East Main Street - just one person.
White Street - no one.
On West Main Street there were four vehicles parked, but they may have belonged to tenants.
From the Village to Sangerfield - no one.

I think there might have been an NFL game on television!

Heading out into the country, everything was equally still.

Even at the little pond at the foot of Grant Hill not even a single pair of mallards occupied the small area of open water.

So - I put away my camera, reversed course, and drove home!

I was really glad to find these two pictures waiting

IN THE MAIL

First,  this wonderful photograph of a Bald Eagle. I do not know who the photographer was, but the picture was taken"recently," on Stone Road in West Winfield.

And from Don Hinman, this shivery view of Turkey Falls, covered with ice.

Also in my mail were these

The Strohmeyer family, along with Miss Lydia Kouletsis of Oakland, Maine, recently returned from a visit to La Jolla, San Diego and Borrego Springs, California.

Mrs. Sexton of Stafford Avenue entertained four bridge players from Morrisville as well a trio from Waterville last Friday.  Any from this area who are interested in learning the game or refreshing their past experience are encouraged to contact Lois Battles at 941-1440.

Ms. Mhora Lorentson of Brookfield, Connecticut, and her mother, Lois Battles of Waterville, were weekend guests of Ms. Jane Newsom Stephenson over the weekend.

I also mention that Mr. and Mrs. Richard Methe and their son, Iain, of Ballston Lake, New York, were recent guests at the home of Mrs. Brown in Whiskey Hollow.  Mrs. Methe is the former Miss Allison Brown who grew up in this village.

SPECIAL NOTICES

If you are looking for a new way to stretch your food dollars, Food $ense$ can help!

(This is a local program designed with you in mind, and the following is well worth reading!)

The Food Bank of CNY is able to purchase food items in large quantities at discounted prices, and this savings is passed on to the program's customers. The Food Bank operates this service with more than 40 sites in a 14 county area.
Monthly Food $en$e packages are created by the Food Bank and a newsletter is generated and distributed to each site coordinator. The coordinators are responsible for taking orders from customers, placing the order to the Food Bank and distributing the packages on a specific date.  A food package contains 10-12 items, including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, and staple food items at approximately a $35 value.
ANYONE wishing to stretch their food dollars can participate. The cost of the package is $15.50 and participants pre-pay with cash, EBT card, local check, credit/debit card at the time of order. Sign ups are the first Wednesday of the Month at the Village Hall from 12-1, during the Senior Luncheon.  See Debra Atkinson.  The first Thursday of the month you may sign up at the Library from 4:30-5:30 and ask for Jane. You may also call Debra Atkinson at 750-5785 within the first week of the month to place your order.  Pick-up is generally the third week of the month on Fridays at Southgate Ministries Church at 10 o’clock in the morning.
The food bank would like to have 30 participants each month to sustain the program.  The community is just at this level currently.  So why not give it a try and help keep this valuable program in Waterville.  If you have any questions please contact Debra Atkinson at 750-5785.

Have a good day everyone!

I want to apologize to anyone on the Huddleblogger mailing list who has received "spam" email from me in the last day or two. No: I did NOT send it. And I have just now changed the password on that AOL account to avoid any further such nuisances!
