It's Garbage Day,
and perhaps it's a record-setting day, as well,
because at 6:15 a.m. it's 46.9 degrees.

Yesterday afternoon at around 2:30:

Last week's "cold snap" had added more ice at the opening of the caves in Forge Hollow.

More snow had drifted around the little stone wall at the top of Grant Hill.

.............. and covered fields, bringing happy snowmobilers out to ride.

Warmer temperatures drew walkers out to the Marshall Trail ....

........... and youngsters to the hillside in front of Madison Central School to slide.

*******

In Waterville, the Sangerfield plow was cleaning side streets.

West Main Street was quiet .....

....... and my tour ended with a stop at the Waterville Car Wash's Laser Wash bay and a happy car.

*****

At 11:00 p.m. it was 42 and raining hard.
Now, the rain has stopped. Much of the snow will have disappeared, and a graph of the today's temperature will soon start to resemble a thrill ride at Disney!

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"Rain Showers to Snow
Windy, Turning Much Colder

A strong cold front will track into the region during the morning. Temperatures will rapidly fall during the afternoon, which may promote rapid freezing on area roads/sidewalks/parking lots by the late afternoon.

Winds will remain gusty through Tuesday night. Bitter cold temperatures, combined with gusty winds will make for dangerous wind chills through Wednesday morning.
Another area of concern will be heavy lake effect snow, especially throughout Oswego, Oneida and Herkimer County, Some areas directly east of the lake will pick up several feet of snow from Monday night into Wednesday afternoon."

IN THE MAIL

A note from Gil Condon - "A new TV ad by Pepsi during the NFL games reminds me of the helmets that Waterville Squad used when the team was formed. The leather eventually got replaced with super plastic fiberglass. We played 6 man football, mostly in the snow on uphill fields ( Not Kidding) we had a few of the new helmets."

(That's wonderful!  Thank you Gil!)

A request from the blogger:

Having introduced the elegance of the early twentieth century in the new masthead, I'd like to add another feature typical of that time to the blog.

Any of you who have read old issues of The Waterville Times will have found yourselves perusing the "Social Notes."  Before I began blogging, I wrote a weekly column called "In Timely Manner" in which I tried to follow that Victorian style and I would like very much to incorporate a similar feature, here, in "At Home in the Huddle."

But I can't do it alone!

Please share some of your recent travels and/or social engagements  and special events with me so that blog readers may soon begin to learn that, for instance ....

"Mr. and Mrs. (So-and-so) spent the holidays with (the XYZ Family) in (Someplace Different) where they attended (the theater, perhaps.)

OR

"Miss (whoever) recently entertained (someone special.)

OR

"The XYZ family recently returned from "Parts Previously Unknown" etc., etc., etc.

You don't have to do the old-fashioned writing if you don't want to. Just tell me what happened and I'll go back in time with the news!

Thank you for your help!
