A  Special "Thank You"
from Vicki Sabol, Director, The Waterville Area Food Pantry:

"I want to send a big thank you to all the donors to the postal workers' food drive this past weekend and especially to the postal workers who worked extra hard to collect 2800 pounds of food in the Waterville, Deansboro, Oriskany Falls area.  There are so
many giving people in this area, so I want to acknowledge that and thank them all."

Farmers Market moves outdoors for Summer
from John Brouillette:

"The Waterville Farmers Indoor Market was well received by many over the last few months. A BIG THANK YOU to all the patrons, farmers and artisans that made it successful. The last session will take place on May 22nd with Promise Land Farm providing BBQ takeout and Melissa Grace Clark providing acoustical entertainment. In addition to providing good quality, locally grown or made products from farmers and artisans, the objective is also to serve as a social venue as well.

"The exciting news with the Waterville Farmers Market is that it will partner with the Waterville Public Library starting on Friday, June 6th from 11 to 6 pm and will take place on the grounds of the library.

"The market will run each Friday into October.

Debra Atkinson will continue to manage the Summer Market and be the lead communicator with the vendors and public. According to Jill Getman, Assistant Director of the Waterville Public Library, they are planning events that will compliment the Farmers Market and will include their annual Summer Reading Program, Children's Story Hour & Crafts, Family Movie Nights, afternoon Story Swap for Old Timers (shared stories of historic and current area), live music, events on local food and farming leading up to the Fall 2014 Regional Read of "The Dirty Life: A Memoir of Farming, Life, and Love" by Kristen Kimball, and more."

Here, There, and Everywhere.

In an E-note that I received very late on the 17th was the following - from Sherry Wright who, with her husband, Dave, lives several hundred feet west of Route 12:

"May 15 around 12:10 p m North Brookfield ...... was hit with a
micro burst ( mini tornado) taking down minimum 5 trees and
tops of others and we didn't get power until 7:10 am today."

I drove down there on Sunday afternoon and, sidling around a "road closed" sign..........

... I could see damage to trees close to Route 12 and hear the sound of chain saws coming from all directions.

Looking north toward the cemetery, the Wrights' residence is to the left and behind the largest tree trunk.

They are now well-supplied with firewood.

With the Wrights' horse barn in the background lies a heap of residue from the yard on the south side of Swamp Road.......

....... where I always stop to look at the swans.  I hope they're alright!

Karen Fox wrote that: "A HUGE tree fell at Hudson's on Fitch Rd. and a  BIG branch fell on wires taking out some poles and a transformer just south of us on rte. 12."

Amazingly - and thankfully -  I have heard of no personal injuries or real damage to any buildings, there.

I imagine that there will discussion over the next several days as to just what sort of storm it was - tornado or "micro-burst" or durecho. Whatever name the experts choose, it was without doubt one heck of a strong wind!

When I left North Brookfield I headed for the American Legion, intending to go to the Truitt Benefit. There was one spot left in the parking lot and I thought it was mine, but just as I put my camera down and got my hand on the gear shift, another car came along and zipped right in ahead of me!  When I went back, half-an-hour later, there were cars parked out along the road!
At least I'm glad it was a success!

In meadows between Kling's Mill and the Sangerfield River, meadows are filled with "Cuckoo Flower," Cardamine pratensis,
native throughout most of Europe and Western Asia. The specific name pratensis is Latin for "meadow."

F.Y.I.

Every time I mention "the Landis Farm" someone asks me where it is.

You'll find it easily. Just start up Shanley (or "East Hill") Road from Route 315 and look for the big silos and white fence.  The "farm stand" is next to the house.

Tuesday is GREEN WASTE Collection

I'll be back on Wednesday morning.
