The Brookfield Beavers, who had beaten McGraw 11 - 5 in the Class D Semi-finals,  lost to Oriskany Wednesday night in the race for the Section III Class D Title:

"Brookfield (13-5) pitcher Jake Cowen allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out seven. Oriskany scored an unearned run in the first inning and two more in the fifth. In the sixth, Ethan Juarez singled and with the bases loaded and two outs, scored Oriskany’s fourth run on a wild pitch.
Austin Head drove in Brookfield’s run with a first-inning single. The Beavers left the bases loaded in the first, third and seventh innings, and they had runners at second and third in a sixth inning that ended when a base runner interfered with Enos on a grounder to shortstop.

I just finished watching several videos of both the High School and the Memorial Park School marching bands' Memorial Day performances and agree with all the other reviews and critiques that I've heard:

Give the band members an A+
for both their instrumental and parade formation performances!

And an A+, too, to their music teachers and band directors
for teaching and encouraging such outstanding work!

But someone deserves an F for music selection:
Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting)" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller"  are not appropriate for Memorial Day or any other patriotic occasion.

(I do understand the why and wherefore and the instructors' dilemma, but also agree with the criticism and hope that someone, sometime, explains the difference to the youngsters!)

Praise for Patriotism!

People all over the country have been following the travels of Our Veteran on the Run, Bob VanDenbergh.

His year-long Run to raise funds for the Wounded Warriors Project ended on Monday the 26th, when he ran from his home in Forge Hollow to Waterville, for Memorial Day activities there, then back to Deansboro  .....

.............. where, as a member of the Barton Hose Co. / Deansboro Fire Department, he marched in the Color Guard.

His wife, MaryBeth, wrote: "In Deansboro after he got his presentations from the County and Fort Drum he spoke briefly, at the end he said that he needed to 'run' as he had 5 miles to go and needed to get to Oriskany Falls in time for the parade. Here he is,  running out of the cemetery."

In Oriskany Falls - Crossing the Finish Line!

- and a few last words.

Special Souvenirs!

We all knew how far Bob had run, but I asked how long that had actually ttaken:

Approximately 16,872 minutes
or 281.2 hours
or 11.79  24-hour days.

***
Bob is getting ready to send a check to the Wounded Warrior Project within the next few days.  If you would still like to make a donation or have yet to mail him your pledge you can send it to:

Bob VanDenbergh
2047 State Rte. 315, Deansboro, N.Y. 13328.

If you have made a pledge and need to discuss changes or details, you may Email him at:
He'll be glad to hear from you.

LOOKING AROUND

It won't be long now. East Main Street will be a busy place, again!

On West Main Street, Diane and Val don't often have a chance to sit down, but when they do they have a perfect place to relax ....

....... and all of those bright chairs at Morgans are inviting, too!

****

Out in the country, haying began about a week ago. Corn is up a couple of inches and monster sprayers, like this, are frequently seen creeping across fields.

Dandelions are going to seed. They remind me of snow flakes: when they're in great quantities, all over the place, we hate them, but if we look at them one at a time, they're really quite wonderful!

Always beautiful, the Swamp Pink (or "Pinkster") next to the Coffman's home south of the Village ......

......  and the meadows of pink "Ragged Robin" or "Gilleyflower" and Buttercups next to Loomis Road.

A note to the Wednesday Night Walkers:

"We would like to thank everyone who dedicated time to our Walking Group! Due to busy busy spring and summer schedules we will be stopping our planned weekly Wednesday walks.
However, it sounds like there is still interest in organizing a few trips to trails and the ADKs, so we'll be in touch with dates on those. Enjoy the sunny days and lots of walks whenever you can!"

MONDAY IS MEMORIAL DAY
Originally called "decoration Day."

"On May 5, 1862, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle."

(To read more, please click HERE.)

For the 110th year, the Henry Bonnard statue of a Civil War Soldier will preside over Memorial Day Exercises in Monument Park.

Monument Park before World War II, when the Cannon Balls and Cannon were donated to the war effort.

"Bob VanDenbergh, 'Our Veteran on the Run' for the Wounded Warrior Project, will be finishing up his 1776 miles on Monday -running to Waterville, Deansboro and Oriskany Falls for all of the Memorial Day parades. It is not to late to donate to the WWP and support Bob on his year long journey. No amount is too small. You can mail a check to Bob @ 2047 State Rte 315 Deansboro, NY 13328 or give it to him at any of the parades."

"Thank you for your support.  MBV"

Here & There and Beyond

The Park has been mown, the Patriotic Bunting hung ....

............. and the Village Street Sweeper has made its rounds.

East Main Street was a busy place on Thursday afternoon.

Two of the usual vendors moved their wares outdoors and shoppers eagerly selected "all things BBQ and more" to take home for Supper!

********

It was just starting to rain when I drove past the Beaver Creek Golf Course in Sangerfield on Wednesday afternoon, and this twosome may have been heading for the Clubhouse - a popular spot indeed - and not just for golfers!

********************

About two weeks later than usual, the Wild Columbine in Forge Hollow is just starting to bloom.

You'd have to slog in to the muckiest part of Nine Mile Swamp to see whether or not the Yellow Lady Slippers that we used to visit every Memorial Day weekend are blooming.

Other Swamp Treasures

Wild Geranium or "Cranesbill"  ....

...... and "Pinkster."

An Unexpected Sighting

Air Force One, en route to Griffiss.

The FAA had issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) early yesterday advising them of several overlapping "no fly" zones to be in effect during President Obama's visit to this area.
Because no one else should have been in the air in the area north of Hanover at 2:20 yesterday afternoon, I presume that that was the President's aircraft that I saw heading towards Rome. (Awfully far away, it's that tiny thing right in the center of the picture.)
