It's 48 degrees and clear at 6:00 a.m.

The TWCNY Weather Forecast as of Sunday afternoon:

"A Few Clouds Overnight, A Warm Start to the Week

"The overnight will feature just a few clouds and temperatures will be relatively mild with lows generally in the upper 40s and low 50s. We'll see intervals of sun and clouds on Monday and despite the risk for a shower/storm, highs will be in the upper 70s and low 80s.

This warm air mass looks to stay in place through Tuesday (highs near 80); however, there will be a few showers/storms to contend with due to a warm front draped across the state and an approaching cold front. The overall weather pattern is expected to remain unsettled for the rest of the week and temperatures will ease up as highs eventually return to the 60s and 70s."

Today is Garbage Day.
Tuesday is METALS Collection Day.

I hope you moms all had a Happy Mother's Day!

I'm quite sure that Diane Cornish and her helper-gals, Val and Janice, at Merri-Rose Florist,  made lots of ladies happy!

Together they filled several hundred orders...

...........  and by Saturday noon there was just a small - but glorious - sampling of arrangements left for the delivery team.

"Merri-Rose" really is one of the Village's "treasures!"

************************

This was the weekend when everyone exclaimed,
"Finally!"

Kids rode their bikes,

... some people took grandchildren for walks....

...  dogs took their people ....

.... and some folks just sat in the sun and celebrated Sunshine!

*****

Here and there in the village Magnolias are blooming - both the pink "saucer" variety and white "stellata" (or star) which has smaller flowers ......

......... and Dandelions decorate grassy spaces everywhere.

Daffodils are blooming at the Bandstand and ...

in dark woods, Dutchmen's Breeches ......

.. and little white Violets are in bloom.

Along with all of those Sights of Spring, there is an unmistakable sound, now heard in swampy areas:

"Peepers!"
(I just found this website - you can listen to the Peeper Chorus, and then hear some soloists!)

The Local Bird Count!

My "hummers" are back and I've put an orange out hoping to get the attention of the Baltimore Orioles.

******
Very soon after Shirley Kellogg  phoned from Stockwell on Saturday to say that the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks had arrived, I received an Email from Lynne Moore, who lives on the west side of the Swamp, across from Stockwell, with these pictures :

A Grosbeak at a feeder right up against her kitchen window!

She also had Finches ...

....  both "Gold-" and I'm not sure that the one on the right is. Perhaps someone will tell us?

Lynne also said shat she and her mother had the good luck to see a Bald Eagle in the vicinity of "the old dump" on Route 315 - that's where Jody Hildreth saw one several months ago!

This picture of an Indigo Bunting was taken from "Google Images," but the Dobmeiers at "Frog Park" are getting a look at the real thing. It's been visiting their feeder for the past few days!

All we're missing is a Scarlet Tanager: rare around here, indeed, but we'll keep looking!

A REMINDER

This is Bob VanDenbergh,

and I took this picture of him last Memorial Day just as he was starting out a year-long run to raise funds for The Wounded Warrior Project.

This year on Memorial Day - May 26th - he will pass his original goal of 1,000 miles and end his run at the Oriskany Falls parade with a total of 1776 miles!

Have you made your pledge of a few pennies per mile or sent a lump sum donation?

"(Bob) so wants to make it to $10,000.00. If everyone that has pledged is able to pay we will be close so every new donation will count. This is a far cry from
his original goal of 1000 miles and raising $1000.00."

Checks can be made out to Bob VanDenbergh
OR The Wounded Warriors.

Donations can be mailed to Bob VanDenbergh

FOR THE RECORD

The sixth year of "Once Upon a Time in Waterville" got off to a fine start last Friday afternoon. Thirty-one "old timers" had a grand time reminiscing about May Day traditions of our childhood (the girls remembered making May Baskets, but the fellows knew nothing about them at all!) and Firemen's Field Days (held at Memorial Park before the school was built, and 'tho no alcohol could be served there, no fireman went without a beer or two, thanks to some very enterprising youths who happened to live across the street from the Park!) and summertime visits by a traveling circus.
As always, a fair amount of time was spent talking, but an equal amount spent laughing, with cookies, donuts, lemonade and ice tea - courtesy of the Library - enjoyed throughout!
The next Old Timers' gathering will take place on Friday, May 29th, at the Waterville Public Library at "a little after 1:00."
Visitors are always welcome!  You do not need to be "old," nor do you need to be a native Watervillian.  Come along and just listen, if you'd like to, or share your memories.
On the 29th we'll be talking about "Decoration Day" as we marked it in the 1940's, planting crops and playing ball. (And all the other subjects onto which we always seem to get sidetracked!)

*******

Because this has been an especially long post and  there are no announcements that I know of to make in the next dew days, I probably won't be back (online) until Thursday morning  - unless something very news- or blog-worthy happens.

Don't worry!  I'm not sick: just digging in the dirt or drawing!

And I'm also remembering a question someone asked me several years ago, around the time that the Highway Reconstruction Project came to an end:

"After this is over, what are you ever going to find to write about?"

SMILE!

website and in depth information you present. It's great to come
across a blog every once in a while that isn't the same out of date rehashed material.
