Field Days Cancelled

At first it was a rumor that no one believed, but I have just spoken with Village Clerk Brenda Knoeller who, referring to information given her by Kevin Kelley, a member of the Waterville Fire Department, told me that Waterville's Volunteer Firemen themselves voted not to sponsor the traditional Firemen's Field Days activities this year.

She said that the Village had nothing whatsoever to do with the decision, adding that the WFD may decide to sponsor another sort of (fund raising) event sometime during the Summer.

This is the first time in my memory - since moving here in 1968 - that this annual summertime event will not take place. It used to be paired with the Village Merchants' "Cracker Barrel Days"  -  a favorite "happening" - but it has been quite a long time since "Sale" racks and tables filled Main Street sidewalks during Field Days weekend.

Perhaps we'll find out, in days and weeks to come, what prompted this decision.

  1. The field days have gone down hill, they aren't making much money off of them anyway. The only thing getting money is the food. They haven't had good rides in years, it's not surprise that they didn't want to waste their time doing the field days again when they could try something new to raise money.

  2. Yeah I agree. The field days were great when I was younger. But all they have done lately are bounce houses. It's pretty lame. Waterville has been through more n more changes. I stayed here because it was a great place to raise a family. Hopefully we get some more positive changes. Its really sad to see all these store fronts empty. Im not against law enforcement but it seems that this town was more lively when it was town cops. It felt more like a community looking out for a community. I always felt that this town went down hill some when we got a sheriffs office and a trooper barracks. I don't know exactly when things changed so much but something needs to happen here. Maybe a bank and grocery store could be a start!

  3. agree..the parade was really the only exciting things! The rides were terrible and the people who ran them were pretty scary to say the least

  4. I think its sad but a smart decision. I loved the field days as a kid but the town isnt the same as it used to be. There is a little too much going on in the seedy underbelly to invite this kind of trouble. Something has to be done about the drug problem that has invaded our once sleepy town.
