Wednesday a.m. update

******************

It's 35.6 degrees and raining at 7:30 a.m.

Although some School Districts have announced early dismissals or closings, Waterville is NOT on that list.

The morning Weather Forecast fromTWCNY:

"Precip Intensifies and Changes to All Snow Wednesday;

Cold Air and Strong Winds Arrive Through the Day.

"Precipitation intensifies through the day and with temperatures falling from the 30s into the 20s, we'll see a changeover to all snow across Central NY through the afternoon. The heaviest of the snow is expected to taper Wednesday night but blowing and drifting snow will continue to make for very difficult travel. In general, snow totals look to be between 8 and 15 inches. However, areas that see more mixing with rain and sleet farther south and east will likely end up on the lower end of this range. There will also be locations that pick up over a foot of snow. There is a lot of variability all depending on the position of that rain/snow line and when the transition to all snow occurs.

High pressure builds to the south on Thursday, allowing for lingering snow showers to taper and it will be unseasonably cold with highs only in the teens. Despite unsettled conditions staying in the forecast through at least the first half of the weekend, temperatures should manage to recover into the upper 30s/near 40 degrees Friday and Saturday."

As I drove through the Village and around the countryside, on Tuesday,  it seemed impossible that the National Weather Service's forecast could be right!  All day it had felt totally Springlike: the temperature reached nearly fifty degrees, the sun shone, snow melted and just about everyone who was outdoors had left their winter garb behind.

Students leaving the High School knew just what they didn't need on an afternoon like this: coats!

West Bacon Street. More mud!

Slurp!

Bare spots in the gully next to Fuess-Cleary Road.

Looking East from West Hill to Shanley Road, Hanover and Tassell Hill.

But just in case Wednesday really does turn out to be cold and white, I stopped at Alcotts Greenhouse to take some brighter images for you to look at!

Gaylene Fairchild met me at the door holding a tray of Shamrocks.

Right next to her were these African Violets ......

..........  and in a sunny window, Kalanchoe in every color!

I left with a really delightful Old Farmer's Almanac Gardening Calendar! Beautiful pictures and fun reading.

(Thank you, Gaylene!)

When Library Director Jeff Reynolds opened his mail on Monday morning he must have blinked at least twice when he read that the Waterville Public Library was the recipient of $2,000 from Mohawk Valley Astronomical Society president Jim Dulak plus a $1,000 matching contribution from IBM to be used for collection materials related to astronomy!

He immediately sent off some mail of his own:
