Monday Morning Update

PAUL HADLEY

**************************

It's Garbage Day.
44 degrees and dry at 5:30 a.m.

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"Warm Start but Bitter Finish Today, Cold Weathr Continues

With a cold front passing through the area this morning we have warm temps to start but cold air quickly moves in with highs falling into the 30s by the time the day is said and done. Showers will be light and may end as a few light flurries.

Tonight we have little in the way of flurries most areas see skies clear a bit and temps fall more in the teens and single digits. It will mean a cold start to our Tuesday.
We get a small fast moving system back in the mix midweek, but overall the week as a whole looks pretty quiet and colder than average."

IN THE NEWS

"GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Waterville Spoils Opener for Herkimer."
- from the Herkimer Telegram.

******

And so it begins ..................

.........  snow has covered the land in Hanover .....

..............   and all the farm fields on West Hill are white.

The first icicles are forming next to the little waterfall on Gridley-Paige Road ....

............... and at the mouths of the caves in Forge Hollow.

The deepest snow that we had, last week, was around eight inches:
out at "Jr." Bartlett's home, east of Buffalo, they were measuring snow in feet.

Bart said it took a whole day to shovel a path from the house, above, ....

.... to the barn.........

............. and then he dealt with excavating his Jeep - just about buried beneath five FEET of snow!

(Thanks for those pictures, "Bart.")

Here in the Village there was just enough snow to make it look Christmasy. The DPW had put Wreaths and Wraps on the Victorian Lamp Posts ...

... and all along Main Street merchants decorated their windows and buildings.

I had happened to drive through town in time to see
artist Julie Urtz painting the "Whoville" scene!

*****

On side streets, many homes are festive.

The Bogans', on Babbott Avenue.

The Strohmeyers', on Putnam .....

... and right across the street, the Verdons are at work on their display of over 12,000 computer-controlled lights.

In the Park, two very special Elves have hung bows and bundles of greenery on the Bandstand and signs are up indicating that it's time for the Masons to bring in a couple hundred Christmas Trees for their Annual Sale.

(Thank you, Elves!)

My special thanks to Kristin Strohmeyer for sending these pictures taken during the Annual Parade of Lights, last Friday....

.................... and Thank You, as well, to Doris Stephan, for these pictures taken at the Waterville Historical Society after the Parade.
