- IN MEMORIAM -

1936 - 2014

In yesterday's blog post I included the history of the three buildings on West Main Street that are in the process of being painted and mentioned that they were within the "Historic Triangle District," named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

I then received an E-letter asking whether or not any buildings on Putnam Street were also on the National Register.  Apparently the question had been brought up at a recent meeting of the Waterville Planning Board which was attended by a number of residents who are opposed to the proposed construction of three apartment buildings on the former Putnam Hall/Knitting Mill site by Mr. David Sullivan. Mr. David O'Brien, chairman of the Planning Board, was correct when he answered, "No."

Here's a diagram of the "Historic Triangle."

There are two other Waterville buildings on the National Register:
The Tower Homestead and the Masonic Temple.
