Sunday with Monday update

JOYCE HOLIC

*****************************

It's Garbage Day
64 degrees and soggy at 7:00 a.m.

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"A Wet and Rainy Monday, Much Cooler and Windy.
Today will be a windy and unseasonably cool with periods rain. We may run into some localized/poor drainage flooding issues due to periods of heavy rain. Temperatures are only expected to top out between 65 and 70 degrees.
As low pressure lifts to the north, a drier air mass will temporarily build back in Tuesday but it won't be much warmer with highs in the low 70s.

A few showers return to the forecast for both Wednesday and Thursday and after dealing with below average temperatures through the better part of the week, highs should get closer to 80 degrees by Friday."

MORE EMAIL

This letter and three photographs from Virginia Keith:

"Yesterday, I was driving down Post Street just this side of the Marshall line when I came upon a stopped truck in my lane where the driver was pointing toward a field on the left.  I pulled up next to him and asked what was up.  He said he had just witnessed lightning hitting two trees and that they were both completely engulfed in flames for some time and now the centers are completely gone.  Sure enough. Here are photos:"

"JJust past the McConnell Farm and Maxwell Road, on the left, heading North."  (Pretty amazing!  Thank you, Virginia.)

From Lynne Moore, this photograph and query:

"I was enjoying a very nice day reading in my quiet backyard last evening when this  bird  flew  directly overhead  and soft landed
right there in front of me.  It  seemed  to have a slightly injured right wing. Looked  to me like a seagull  or a near relative. I thought  you might be able to find out if it really
is a seagull."

I don't think there can be any doubt about it: here's a "Google Images" shot of a young Herring Gull.

The poor thing really is a little bit off course, but you were lucky to have it visit and stand still long enough for you to take its picture.

From Doris Stephan, for the Waterville Book Discussion Group:

AUGUST SELECTION
for Wednesday, Aug. 27th.

The African Queen by C. S. Forester
A fast-moving tale and a very good yarn...Mr Forester again and again proves himself a master of suspense - New York Times Book Review

Call the Waterville Public  Library at 841 4651 to reserve a copy of the this best seller. Then pack your lunch and come to the Meeting Room at the Library at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 27th.  Coffee, tea and dessert will be served.

Then...
"A classic story of adventure and romance - the novel that inspired the legendary movie starring Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart."..watch the film based on the book.   John Huston's adventure yarn was spruced up for its 50th anniversary in  2001 -and is still a ripping, gripping yarn."

PICTURES
in answer to readers' queries ....

It looks like a rose, but it's called "Flowering Raspberry." Although the fruit does look as if it might taste good, it doesn't.

Several Ordinary Ferns

Other than "Ostrich" .....

.............. and "Christmas Fern" ......

...... probably the most common is "Sensitive Fern."

"Royal Fern" is abundant along the banks of the Sangerfield River

 in Nine Mile Swamp ....

.......  and "Bladder Fern" grows in all the nooks and crannies of the "Horsebone Limestone" around the Forge Hollow Caves.

LESS COMMON

I keep hoping that I'll spot some tiny 3" fronds of "Maidenhair Spleenwort" growing there, too, but I never have ....

............. although there are a few patches of 6" tall "Ebony Spleenwort" just off the side of the Marshall Trail.

There's really nothing prettier than patches of "Maidenhair Fern" in shady, moist woods ....

...... and finding rare bits of "Polypody" growing on old stumps in woods near the Village reminds me of Adirondack hikes and finding it spread like green blankets on top of huge rocks, there.
