Thursday morning update

It's Garbage Day.
44 degrees and dry at 7:30 a.m.

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"Cool and Mainly Dry, Getting Cold!
We start with some lake effect showers and clouds. It will be a damp morning and a dry afternoon for most. Its cool but not cold to start and this afternoon most stay in the 40s to near low 50s.
We wait for a larger system to arrive for Halloween, this will bringing showers around or just after trick-or-treating. After the showers work through, much colder air arrives for the weekend in the 40s and even some spots in the upper 30s.  "

IN THE MAIL

I've been hoping that someone would recognize one of the Hallowe'en Party-goers c. 1974, and Sheri Salm Brennan sent me an Email, yesterday, that read "It's Me!"

She added that her cousin, Ricky Martin, was "Casper the Friendly Ghost," so I dug a little deeper ...........

.... and here's a picture of both of them!

(Thanks, Sheri!)

Here & There

Are you watching Matt Jurczak's pumpkin display grow?

Other Displays to see ...

At the Edick home on Brothertown Road, the entire yard is filled with home-crafted decorations ....

............ and there's barely a square foot of space left at the Frosts' on Route 315 across from California Road!

Main Street Make-overs Continue.

Finishing touches are being put on the woodwork around the entryway at Main Street Liquors ....

......... and the West side of the Uptown Salon building has been painted. Now we know: it will be olive green.

The "eyebrows" above windows of the Gethel residence on Putnam Street have an attractive new "painted lady" effect that shows off the Victorian detailing.

Fields and Roadsides

Milkweed pods have opened ......

... and even on gray days the berries of swamp-dwelling Black Alder bushes are bright.

PUMPKIN SPECIALS

Another masterpiece from Jody Hildreth!
"If you have a moment, click on this link and vote for my pumpkin - the middle one. I would greatly appreciate it as the prize would help me with my wildlife photography."
http://www.ducks.org/pumpkinvote/

(I voted!)

And here's another Jody special ....

"One of my favorite things to do since I was a kid.  When I was young I might only get one pumpkin to carve each year, so I practiced on apples.  Somehow, I learned to hollow out an apple with a steak knife then practice my simple faces and lit them up with birthday candles."

Meanwhile, on Sanger Avenue,
all eyes are once again on the front yard of #188 ......

........  where the first of about 300 Jack o' Lanterns, carved by Matt Jurczak and his crew, are now on display.

Watch for more!!

WCS Girls' Soccer - Final Score
from Syracuse.com

The TWCNY Weather Forecast:

"Highs will only manage the low 50s, but the winds will make it feel like the 40s all day.
Any lingering lake showers tonight will slowly diminish, as high pressure slowly builds in with drier air late tonight and especially Monday.  Lows will drop to within a few degrees of 40 by sunrise Monday morning.  Any lingering lake clouds to kick off Monday should clear out pretty nicely, and allow for a decent amount of sun with highs well up into the 50s.  It will be a pretty nice start to the week.
Monday night a warm front will swing through with clouds and possibly a shower or two.  In the wake of the warm front, a gusty southwest wind will usher in an unseasonably warm 70 something air mass during the day Tuesday, plus we will see some sun!  Late Tuesday into Tuesday night, a cold front will make it's presence felt with clouds and showers.  Behind the cold front, a more seasonable air mass will blow in for Wednesday with highs returning to the 50s under some sun.
After Wednesday it will turn colder as we head into Halloween and the weekend, and if our forecast models are correct, wet snow could fly and possibly accumulate for some next weekend.  There's still a lot of time for the forecast to change for Halloween and next weekend, but right now it looks pretty spooky."

-With thanks to Dave McNamara, who sent these two rare photographs of a unique Historic Site in Stockwell:

Hidden in a hedgerow, the "outhouse" behind the former one-room schoolhouse in Stockwell .  The little building's usefulness probably ceased when the School was absorbed into the Waterville Central School District, formed in 1929, if not several years earlier.

(Thank you, Dave!)
